Five years ago nearly every enquiry we took for sports netting was cricket. Now a good share of them are multi-sport arenas — a turf that runs box cricket at night, football in the evening, and increasingly badminton and pickleball courts alongside. Owners often assume one net spec covers all of it. It does not, and the differences are worth knowing before you build.
What Changes Between Games
| Cricket | Hard, fast ball. Needs the strongest twine and the greatest height. Mesh tight enough that a ball cannot wedge. |
| Football / futsal | Big, heavy ball, lower speed. Larger mesh is fine; sustained impact load matters more than height. |
| Volleyball | Surround netting mainly to retain the ball. Moderate height, lighter spec. |
| Badminton | Indoors or fully enclosed — the shuttle is wind-sensitive. Enclosure is about wind and light, not impact. |
| Pickleball | Low bounce, small ball. Needs finer mesh than football netting or the ball goes straight through. |
| Basketball | Surround netting behind the hoops; the height goes where the shots go. |
Mesh Size Is the Real Decision
If you build one arena for several games, the mesh has to suit the smallest ball you will use. A mesh perfectly sized for football will let a pickleball or a tennis ball straight through, and you will be adding a second layer of finer net later at more cost than doing it once. Decide the full list of sports at design stage, then size the mesh to the smallest ball on that list.
Conversely, the twine strength should suit the hardest, fastest ball — which is nearly always the cricket ball. Fine mesh, strong twine: that is the multi-sport combination, and it costs a little more than a single-sport net for good reason. The material trade-offs are explained in HDPE vs nylon cricket nets.
Height by Sport
- Cricket sets your ceiling — if cricket is on the list, its height requirement governs the whole enclosure. See the cricket practice net size and height guide.
- Football and futsal need enough height to keep a lofted clearance in; less than cricket, but not low.
- Pickleball and badminton need very little containment height, but badminton needs full enclosure against wind.
- Volleyball is somewhere in between — enough to stop a mishit leaving the court.
Pickleball: The One Everyone Is Asking About
Pickleball courts are appearing fast, including here in Nellore, and they have specific requirements. The court is small (20 × 44 ft) so several fit into the footprint of one cricket arena, and the surrounding netting only needs to be moderately tall. What it does need is fine mesh — a pickleball is small and hard, and standard football-gauge netting will not hold it. Divider nets between adjacent courts matter too, because with several courts running at once, balls crossing between them is the main complaint players have.
Building for Multiple Sports From the Start
- List every sport you intend to run, including the ones you might add in year two.
- Set mesh from the smallest ball, twine from the hardest ball, height from the highest-flying ball.
- Plan removable divider nets so the space can be split into courts and reconfigured.
- Check that the playing surface suits all of them — cricket and football turf differ from a pickleball or badminton surface, so many arenas run separate zones.
- Position lighting poles with the net poles, at footing stage.

Quick Answers
Can one arena really run cricket and pickleball?
Yes, if the mesh is sized for the pickleball and the twine for the cricket ball, and you use divider nets to split the space.
Do badminton courts need outdoor netting at all?
Outdoors, yes — a full enclosure to cut the wind, otherwise the shuttle is unplayable.
Can we add courts later?
Divider nets can be added if the structure was planned with fixing points. Ask for them at design stage even if you fit them later.
What surface for a mixed arena?
Most owners zone it — turf for cricket and football, a harder surface for pickleball and badminton. We supply both.
