Almost every net we are asked to fix or extend has the same problem, and it is not the material. It is that someone chose the dimensions to fit a budget rather than to fit the game, and the height went first. Height is also the one thing you cannot add later without redoing the poles. So here is how to size a practice net properly, before you compare quotes.
Length: How Much Run-Up Do You Need?
A cricket pitch is 22 yards — 66 ft — between the stumps. A practice lane that only covers the pitch gives a bowler nowhere to run up from, so:
- Full lane, seam bowling with a real run-up: around 90–100 ft if you have the space.
- Standard practice lane: 60–70 ft. This is what most academies and terraces actually build, and it covers the pitch plus a short approach.
- Batting cage / throwdowns only: 30–40 ft. Fine for batting practice with a thrower or bowling machine, not for a run-up.
Measure your available length honestly first, including the space you need to walk around the outside of the structure. Then choose which of the three you are actually building.
Width: Do Not Go Narrow
Around 10–12 ft is the practical width for a single lane. Narrower feels cramped, the ball comes back off the side net constantly, and a batsman cannot play a proper cross-bat shot without hitting the netting on the backswing.
For multiple lanes, add a divider net between each and remember that dividers take heavy repeated impact — specify them at least as strongly as the outer nets, not as an afterthought.
Height: The One That Matters Most
This is the decision to get right. Guidance by use:
| Batting cage, throwdowns only | 12–15 ft |
| Terrace practice lane, junior players | 15–20 ft |
| Academy lanes, serious practice | 20–25 ft |
| Box cricket / turf arena, roof net essential | 25–30 ft |
| Apartment rooftop | Sides at height + full roof net, always |
Two rules of thumb. First: if there is a road, a neighbour's compound or a lower roof on the other side of the net, go higher than you think you need. Second: on any elevated site, a roof net is not a luxury — a ball leaving a rooftop is a genuine hazard, as we cover in terrace cricket nets for apartments.
Why height costs what it costs
Raising an enclosure adds netting on every side at once, plus taller poles, plus deeper footings to carry them. That is why height moves a quote more than length does — and why people cut it. Understand that trade-off deliberately instead of discovering it when the quote comes back.
Roof Net: When You Need One
You need a roof net if you are on a terrace or elevated slab, if the enclosure sits near a road or another property, if it is a commercial box cricket arena, or if the sides are under about 20 ft. You can skip it on an open ground with generous clear space around it and tall side nets. When in doubt, price it — retrofitting a roof onto poles that were not planned for it usually means new poles.
Practical Measuring Steps
- Measure the clear usable area, then subtract about 2 ft on each side for the structure and walkaround.
- Decide your use case from the length table above, and be honest about it.
- Look at what is beyond every side — road, houses, a lower roof — and set your height from the worst of them.
- Check headroom obstructions: water tanks, dish antennas, overhead cables. Cables in particular need clearance planned, not discovered.
- Note the surface you are anchoring into and how material will reach the site.
Take those five numbers to any installer and you will get a meaningful ballpark. The firm quote still needs a site visit, because anchoring conditions move the price more than dimensions do.

Quick Answers
What is the minimum usable practice net?
Around 30 ft long, 10 ft wide, 12 ft high for a batting cage. Below that you are limiting what can be practised.
Can I extend the length later?
Length is the easiest dimension to extend, if you leave the end panel accessible. Height is the hard one.
How many lanes for an academy?
Two lanes handle a small squad; three or four is the usual academy setup. Budget properly for the dividers.
Does the pitch surface change the net size?
No, but a bouncier surface argues for more height. Turf, matting and concrete all play differently.
