Where the Netting Money Actually Goes
Owners often expect the net itself to be the big number. It usually is not — the structure is. Poles of the right section, properly anchored footings, wire rope along every top edge, turnbuckles for tensioning. That skeleton is what keeps the enclosure taut for five years instead of sagging in eighteen months.
The other number that surprises people is height. Raising an enclosure from 20 ft to 30 ft does not add 50% to the netting — it adds net across all four sides at once, plus taller and heavier poles to carry it, plus deeper footings. Height is the single biggest lever on your netting budget, which is exactly why you should decide it deliberately rather than trim it late.
How high does a box cricket enclosure need to be?
Enough that lofted shots stay inside. Under about 20 ft you will be sending balls into neighbouring property regularly, which is how turfs get complaints and then restrictions. Around 25–30 ft with a full roof net is the practical target for a commercial arena. If you are on a rooftop or hemmed in by houses, the roof net is not optional. The Specification That Decides Your Running Costs
A turf runs six hours a night, every night. The net takes thousands of impacts a week — far more punishment than a home terrace net. Specify accordingly:
- Heavier twine than a home net. Commercial use is a different duty cycle. Ask for the twine thickness in writing.
- UV-stabilised, always. Non-negotiable, and ask what the stabilisation actually is.
- Correct mesh for a cricket ball — too loose and balls wedge in it and tear it open over time.
- Full-edge tying at close intervals. Corner-only fixing is the number one cause of a net failing early.
- Replaceable panels. Ask whether an individual damaged panel can be swapped without redoing the whole enclosure. This one question can save you a lot in year three.
- Galvanised or treated steelwork throughout, including base plates and fittings.

The Mistakes That Cost a Season
- Building too low to save on netting, then fighting with neighbours over balls in their compound.
- Under-specifying the net for commercial hours and replacing it in year two.
- Light poles planned after the net structure, so the lighting ends up in bad positions or the poles fight each other.
- Ignoring drainage. One bad monsoon week of standing water and you lose bookings and damage the base.
- No maintenance access. Plan how you will reach the roof net for repairs before it is built.
Sequence: What Order to Build In
- Site survey, dimensions and orientation locked.
- Ground levelling, base and drainage.
- Pole footings — netting and lighting poles planned together at this stage.
- Structure erected, wire rope run and tensioned.
- Turf laid.
- Netting fitted and tied along every edge.
- Lighting, fencing and finishing.
